The countdown is nearly over - in just one week, the new Simpler Recycling regulations for businesses across England come into effect on 31st March 2025.

From this date, all organisations in England with over 10 full-time equivalent employees must separate food waste and dry recycling from general waste collection. This applies to a wide range of premises, including businesses, schools, hospitals, and government buildings.

With only days left, it’s essential to ensure your organisation is compliant. Jo Holmes, the Managing Director for Genee Consulting, leading the new Waste Aware North East campaign, is encouraging businesses to take action now:

There is still time to make the necessary changes to comply with the new legislation. Recycling correctly not only benefits the environment but can also save businesses money in the long run. Support is available, with plenty of free resources and guidance to help organisations transition smoothly.”

Final Checklist – Is Your Organisation Ready?

  1. Identify your waste streams – Know what materials you generate and need to recycle.

  2. Set up an internal system – Ensure there are designated bins and clear labelling for recyclable materials.

  3. Contact a waste collection company – Arrange for the correct waste collections to be in place.

  4. Educate your staff and customers – Make sure everyone understands the changes and how to recycle properly.

  5. Monitor and adjust – Review your waste management practices to remain fully compliant.

What Needs to Be Separated for Recycling?

  • Food waste

  • Paper and cardboard

  • Metals (e.g., cans, tins, foil), plastic (e.g., pots, tubs, trays), and glass (e.g., bottles, jars)

Even small amounts of food waste must be separated to prevent harmful greenhouse gases from landfill. Items like fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, bones, and leftovers should be recycled correctly.
